There are two types of TV signals in New Zealand: UHF and Satellite.

Satellite TV signal

Satellite TV signal comes from an actual satellite up there in the atmosphere, so it's available everywhere in New Zealand where the sun shines and you can pick it up using a Satellite Dish.

UHF TV signal

UHF TV signal comes from transmission towers dotted across the New Zealand landscape.  Each tower broadcasts to the homes around it, so you can get extra regional TV channels via UHF and you can pick it up using a UHF aerial.

Because UHF signal is broadcast from transmission towers, it can't travel over the air across mountain ranges and large bodies of water.  This is why it's available to 87% of New Zealand homes.

Regions where UHF TV signal is not available:

• BAY OF PLENTY (excluding Rotorua and Tauranga)
• MARLBOROUGH
• NORTHLAND
• WEST COAST

Freeview does not manage transmission and cannot extend UHF transmission coverage.  Any extension of the UHF coverage would require investment from the broadcasters and transmission providers.
